Mera Jasm Bakr

Intern

Mohamed Jasm Bakr (Mera) is an intern with the Global Public Policy Institute in Berlin, where he supports the institute’s work on peace and security, particularly in Iraq and Syria.

Mera is from Kirkuk, Iraq and lives in Sulaimani. He is a senior international studies student at the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS), where he concentrates on politics and history. At AUIS, he is also a research assistant at the Institute of Regional and International Studies (IRIS). There, he has worked on several projects, including a report on the 2018 Iraqi Federal Election, in which he covered the election mobilization strategies of political parties in the disputed territories. He has also assisted several IRIS fellows with research in his home region. 

Mera was a fellow of the Peace and Conflict Fellowship Program, which provides a select group of eight AUIS students skills and experience in conflict and peace-building and is organized by GPPi, IRIS, and Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research. 

Mera has been published by international and local outlets such as Fikra Forum of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, The Jerusalem Post, Niqash and 1001 Iraqi Thoughts.
