November 2021 – October 2024

Preventing crises, resolving conflicts and building peace are fraught with challenges and fundamental dilemmas: How much instability is necessary to induce the change that is required to build a stable peace? How to promote democratic openness and participatory governance when those in power fear for their lives – or fortunes? How can actors learn about local realities in sufficient depth and in time to use that knowledge for better interventions? In what ways can practitioners apply a feminist lens to crisis prevention, stabilization and peacebuilding? And how to disrupt illicit flows that drive violence and instability?

As part of our Stabilization Lab project, we investigate and aim to address a series of such dilemmas with targeted studies between November 2021 and October 2024. For each thematic research effort, we will engage a core group of policy practitioners, tackle key research gaps and develop practical policy options. The results of each research strand will be published in at least one major publication targeted at key actors in stabilization policy.

The project is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.
