We Are Seeking a Research Associate on Peace and Security in Asia

The Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi), an independent, non-profit think tank, seeks a research associate to join our team in Berlin. The successful candidate will be a native-level English speaker available full-time or part-time (at least 20 hours/week), initially on a fixed-term contract for 12 months.

We seek an entrepreneurial self-starter with a passion for foreign/security policy and regional and global order, as well as a specific interest in security dynamics in Asia, maritime security, or Indian, Chinese, Japanese and/or European foreign policy. The successful candidate will possess excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, and outstanding writing skills in English.

This is an entry-level position with the potential for rapid professional growth in different directions, depending on prior qualifications and personal interest. We envisage the successful candidate will work primarily on Europe-Asia issues, such as policy research on Europe-India relations, on the Indo-Pacific regional order, maritime security, and BRI/connectivity. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop his/her own arguments through their own research and writing. In addition to research, the candidate will engage in outreach and project administration.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Excellent analytical skills and a strong academic background (completed bachelor’s or master’s degree or pursuing a PhD, with relevant initial work experience);
  • Outstanding writing skills in English (working knowledge of an additional language, particularly German, Mandarin or Japanese, is an asset);
  • A strong interest in Asian peace and security, maritime security, Indian/Chinese/Japanese foreign policy, Europe-Asia relations, or related subject areas (prior research or professional experience in any of these fields is a plus);
  • Attention to detail, excellent time management skills, and the ability to handle several tasks independently and in parallel;
  • The ability to work independently in a team context.

Starting date: As soon as possible.

Please indicate your availability and whether you are seeking a full-time or part-time position (minimum 50%). If applying for the part-time option, please indicate your availability. The part-time option is particularly suited to be combined with a PhD project.
