GPPi Seeks a Research Associate in Peace and Security

The Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi), an independent, non-profit think tank, is seeking a full-time research associate to contribute to the institute’s work on understanding the politics of the use of force and improving ways to anticipate, prevent and stop organized violence. The position is initially offered on a fixed-term contract (12 months) and is based at the institute’s Berlin office.

We seek an entrepreneurial self-starter who is passionate about peace and security, a smart analyst, and a precise and engaging writer and editor. As part of GPPi’s peace and security team, the successful candidate will contribute to managing the PeaceLab blog as well as other policy research and advisory projects. Primarily, these include projects on German and European policy instruments in the realms of diplomacy, the military and peacebuilding.

The candidate’s responsibilities will include a mix of research, editorial, outreach (email newsletters, social media, websites, events) and administrative tasks. This is a junior position with the potential for rapid professional growth in different directions, depending on the successful candidate’s qualifications and interest. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop his/her own arguments through their own research and writing.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Excellent analytical skills and a strong academic background (BA, MA or equivalent) – a few years of relevant work experience are an asset;
  • Outstanding editing and writing skills in English (native level) – the ability to edit and write in German, prior experience in editing, copyediting, and proofreading, and working proficiency in other major languages are additional assets;
  • A strong interest in international peace and security, diplomacy, strategic studies, conflict prevention, peacebuilding, or related subject areas (prior research or professional experience in any of these fields is a plus);
  • Sound editorial judgement;
  • Extreme attention to detail, excellent time management skills, and the ability to handle several tasks independently and in parallel;
  • The ability to work independently in a team context.
