Wendy Anderson

Non-Resident Fellow


Wendy R. Anderson is a non-resident fellow with the Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi). In addition, she is an adjunct senior fellow of the Military, Veterans and Society Program at the Center for a New American Security; managing director of Military and National Security Initiatives at Strong Eagle Media, a Los Angeles-based media company that produces films chronicling the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; a senior advisor at the Truman National Security Project; and a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Wendy has more than 20 years of experience in defense, foreign policy, homeland security and intelligence. From 2010 to 2015, she has served in the Obama administration in key leadership roles in the Departments of Defense and Commerce, including as Deputy Chief of Staff to Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, Chief of Staff to Deputy Secretary of Defense Ash Carter, and Chief of Staff to Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker. Wendy was twice awarded the Department of Defense Medal for Distinguished Public Service, the department’s highest civilian service award. She was also awarded the Joint Meritorious Unit Award for her service in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. In July 2014, the National Journal described her as one of the “25 Women Who Shape National Policy.”

Prior to that, Wendy worked in the US Senate for six years, serving on the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs and on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. She has worked extensively in South Asia (Afghanistan, Pakistan, India), the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa.
