Katrin Kinzelbach is associate director of the Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi) in Berlin, where she leads the institute's work on human rights. Her ongoing research on political persecution is supported by a Schumpeter Fellowship from the Volkswagen Foundation. Katrin also teaches human rights politics at Central European University in Budapest, where she is a visiting professor at the School of Public Policy, and has held teaching assignments at several German universities.
Katrin serves on the North-South Expert Advisory Board of the Heinrich Böll Foundation. Previously, from 2015-2018, she was a member of the German Advisory Board for Civilian Crisis Prevention. In 2016, she was a visiting fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.
Prior to joining GPPi, Katrin worked at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights. During this time, she completed a PhD at the University of Vienna on European human rights diplomacy vis-à-vis China. For her dissertation she received the Körber Foundation’s Deutscher Studienpreis, which honors outstanding PhD research of particular value to society.
From 2001 to 2007, Katrin was a staff member of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). She initially worked in the Afghanistan Taskforce, then joined the UNDP’s Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery, and finally served as project manager in UNDP’s Regional Centre in Bratislava. In this capacity, she focused on democratic governance and security sector reform. Prior to that, Katrin briefly worked for the UN’s Refugee Agency in Geneva, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Croatia, and the OSCE in Bosnia and Herzegovina (1998).
Katrin studied at the Universities of Bonn and Florence, as well as King’s College London. She received scholarships from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the German National Academic Foundation, the Haniel Foundation, and the Fritz Thyssen Foundation.
