Non-Resident Fellow

Andrea Binder is a non-resident fellow with the Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi) and a research fellow in international political economy with the Otto Suhr Institute of Political Science at Free University Berlin. She is also a member of the Politics of Money research network, which is funded by the DFG (German research community). From 2011 to 2014, Andrea served as a GPPi associate director, co-heading the institute’s work on humanitarian action and innovation in development.

Andrea is interested in understanding the causes and consequences of global inequalities. Her research focuses on global finance and humanitarian politics. Andrea holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge, where she studied as a Gates Cambridge Scholar at the Department of Politics and International Studies. She was also a visiting scholar at the Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económica (CIDE) in Mexico and the Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV) in Brazil. Andrea’s dissertation examined the relationship between offshore finance and the power of the state. She received the Körber Foundation’s Deutscher Studienpreis, which honors outstanding PhD research of particular value to society. Between 2017 and 2019, Andrea worked as an adjunct professor at the Hertie School of Governance. 

Andrea’s research has been published in Review of International Political Economy and Global Responsibility to Protect, among others. She is the co-editor of a book on international food assistance and has contributed expert commentary on BBC World News and Deutsche Welle as well as in the Washington Post, Huffington Post, Der Spiegel, and Financial Times Deutschland.

Before joining GPPi as a research associate in March 2006, Andrea worked as a teaching fellow in international relations at the University Tübingen, Germany. Her work experience also includes assignments with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Colombo, Sri Lanka and the Policy Planning Unit of the German Foreign Office in Berlin.

Andrea studied political science, economics and rhetoric at the University of Augsburg and the University of Tübingen, the Graduate Institute of International Studies (HEI) in Geneva, and the Institut d’études politiques de Paris (Sciences Po) in France. She received her master’s in political science and international relations from the University of Tübingen in 2005. For her graduate studies, Andrea received scholarships from the Gates Cambridge Trust, the Cambridge Political Economy Society, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, and the Landesstiftung Baden-Württemberg.
