GPPi researcher publishes article on EU-China human rights dialogue in The China Quarterly
GPPi researcher Katrin Kinzelbach, together with Hatla Thelle from the Danish Institute for Human Rights, have written an article that appears in the 2011, volume 205, of The China Quarterly. Titled Talking Human Rights to China: An Assessment of the EU's Approach, the article provides an assessment of the European Union’s dialogue strategy on human rights in China. The article discusses the interaction between the three tracks of the dialogue (diplomatic, academic and technical cooperation) and how the dynamic of this interaction affects the collaboration between European and Chinese human rights experts. The conclusion is that the dialogue’s set-up is counterproductive because it downgrades political discussions on human rights to low-level meetings and because it antagonizes potential partners at the level of civil society.
