GPPi Research Associate contributes to Knowledge Fair on UN-Business Partnerships

GPPi Research Associate Kristina Thomsen contributed to the Knowledge Fair Session on UN Business Partnerships at the UN Global Compact VII Annual Local Networks Forum which took place in Istanbul, Turkey, on 9-10 June 2009.

The event provided networks, companies and UN representatives an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the evolving UN-business agenda and new developments at the international level, including the new UN-business Guidelines and a demonstration of the new UN-business website platform, its new functionality and value for local networks.

Thomsen presented new policy developments, recent trends and key challenges in UN-business partnerships and pointed to the necessary actions the UN has yet to undertake to become a more effective partner. She stressed that UN agencies, funds and programs continue to engage in partnerships with business and that all signs point towards this trend continuing.

The rapid growth of all forms of partnerships has now given way to a more selective growth. Many UN agencies, funds and programs have become more strategic in their partnership approach. Thomsen also touched on the impact of the current global economic crisis on the UN-business partnership agenda. While many UN agencies expect resource mobilization to be more challenging in the future, the crisis seems to provide an extra incentive to find new and more creative ways of engagement.
