GPPi research associate awarded European Foreign and Security Policy Studies Program fellowship
GPPi research associate Fabian Breuer was awarded an 18-month post-doc fellowship in the European Foreign and Security Policy Studies Program offered by the Volkswagen Foundation, the Riksbankens Jubileumsfond and the Compagnia di San Paolo. The CSFP research and training program supports innovative research projects on European foreign policy. Fabian Breuer’s project on „Brusselisation and the Emergence of a Strategic Culture in the European Foreign Policy and Defence Policy” builds on a recently completed Ph.D dissertation at the European University Institute in Florence.
Based on several case studies, the project will explore two key research questions: first, what decision-making logics determine ESDP? And second, to what extent is a European “strategic culture” emerging? The project focuses on the ESDP-machinery and ESDP-actors at the national and European levels and applies an institutionalist approach focused around the notions of “socialisation” and “Brusselisation”. The research will break new ground, both theoretically as well as empirically, exploring the extent to which ESDP policy-making is guided by a particular logic of appropriateness and a new style of decision-making and to what extent this leads to the development of a European strategic culture.
GPPi will be the host institution during the fellowship. The project will strengthen GPPi’s evolving work on Europe’s global role.
Further information on the program can be found here or by contacting Fabian Breuer.
