GPPi releases conference report on shale gas and European energy security

In August 2011, GPPi made available the conference report for the 9th Transatlantic Energy Governance Dialogue, titled Shale Gas: A Game Changer for European Energy Security? The conference, which took place 12-13 May 2011 at Central European University in Budapest, was organized by the Global Public Policy Institute in cooperation with Central European University and the Brookings Institution. The conference was supported by a grant from the Draeger Foundation and a policy research and debate grant from the European Commission.

Major changes in gas markets in recent years have led several observers to call shale gas a “sea change” in European energy security. This dialogue session brought together professionals from all relevant sectors (governments, NGOs, business, the media, think tank and universities) in order to promote constructive and informed debate on the various issues surrounding the potential of shale gas. The conference explored the transatlantic dimension of this shale gas “sea change” and the governance challenges that have emerged on a variety of fronts.

Speakers included, among others: Nick Butler, Chair of the King’s Policy Institute, King’s College; Anne-Sophie Corbeau, Senior Gas Analyst, International Energy Agency; Charles Ebinger, Director, Energy Security Initiative, Brookings Institution; Melanie Kenderine, Executive Director, MIT Energy Initiative; Cho Khong, Chief Political Analyst, Global Business Environment team, Shell International; Andrey Konoplyanik, Consultant to the Board, Gazprombank & Professor, Russian State Oil & Gas University; Anita Orbán, Ambassador-at-Large for Energy Security, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hungary; John Roberts, Energy Security Specialist, Platts; Ambassador Siri Sletner, Royal Norwegian Embassy, Budapest; Paul Stevens, Senior Research Fellow, Chatham House, London; László Varró, Head of Gas, Coal and Power Markets Division, International Energy Agency; and Geir Westgaard, Vice President, Statoil EU Affairs Office, among others.

The dialogue session was designed to complement GPPi's research program on global energy governance and serve as an important forum for both presenting our ideas and receiving feedback.
