GPPi Fellow comments on recent developments in nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation
Sergey Lagodinsky was among the four guests for an expert discussion on Deutschlandfunk – a renowned German public radio station. Together with the Member of the German Parliament Rolf Mützenich and two leading disarmament experts Oliver Thraenert, German Institute for International and Security Affairs and Götz Neuneck, Institute for Peace Research and Security Study, Lagodinsky offered his view on the recent developments.
He interpreted the undersigning of the new START agreement as yet another hopeful sign of the foreign policy of the Russian President Medvedev. However, he warned not to forget about the Russian fear of the anti-missile defense, which can emerge as an obstacle in the process of ratification and implementation of the new agreement. Lagodinsky also stressed that the topic of disarmament be viewed in a global perspective beyond bilateral US-Russians relations, especially in the context of non-proliferation regime. A major benefit of the new agreement lies in strengthening the legitimacy of the multilateral Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and reinforcement of its obligation by all member states of the NPT.
