GPPi discusses ‘Russia under Vladimir Putin’ on international talk show
On September 30, GPPi fellow Sergey Lagodinsky was a studio guest on Deutsche Welle’s international television talk show Quadriga. The show was centered around a discussion on the announcement by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin that he will return to the Kremlin for a third term as Russia's president after the March 2012 presidential election.
Lagodinsky, who appeared on the show along with American journalist Lucian Kim and German analyst Alexander Rahr, argued that Putin’s announcement was predictable given the political system that he has cultivated during his presidency and then as prime minister. No alternative outcomes were all that feasible, said Lagodinsky. Despite this predictability, president-to-be Putin will have to make considerable adjustments to his political agenda and style in the face of Russia’s growing new-media movement increasingly calling for reform and pressuring the conventional media to hold the government accountable.
