The Lisbon India Monitor publishes GPPi article “India’s Moment?”

The Lisbon India Monitor published an article by GPPi Research Associate Joel Sandhu entitled, “India’s Moment?” The piece argues that despite India being part of the global conversation on how to tackle some of the most pressing international challenges we face, any sustainable solution means an India that deepens its cooperation and the international community that shares some of the achievements more widely with New Delhi. The article was published by the LIM from the Portuguese Institute of International Relations on 12 January 2010.

The piece argues that from climate change and nuclear non-proliferation to international financial crisis, India has the potential to play a more active role in contributing to solving global challenges. With its strong human capital, cutting edge innovation and an economy, which in recent years was able to break the shackles of what the Indian scholar Raj Krishna mordantly termed the ‘Hindu rate of growth’, India has the potential to mobilize its resources to help finding solutions.

For its part, India also stands to gain from deeper cooperation with major players in international institutions to address the most pressing global challenges. Its willingness to throw in resources and human capital would increase India's stature as a rising power, a recognition that New Delhi has been chasing after for several years.

The piece concludes suggesting that there needs to be more intense cooperation amongst the major players in international institutions (namely the US, EU, China and India) on issues ranging from counter-terrorism and nuclear non-proliferation to climate change, food security and failed or failing states. It’s time for India and its Western and Chinese partners to move closer and to make India’s emergence as an international power really count.
