GPPi to participate in CES Berlin session on UN peacekeeping operations
GPPi will participate in the upcoming Harvard University Center for European Studies Berlin Dialogues on 5 May 2008. The session entitled “Hard and Soft Power: Can the UN bring Stability?” will take place at the Wissenschaftzentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung.
With the UN’s peace keeping operations celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2007, its responsibility and number of peacekeepers has also grown over time. Yet, there are worrying signs of the UN’s peacekeeping instrument being overstretched. What are the lessons learned for improving the effectiveness and legitimacy of the UN operations? Do the US, Europe and China live up to their responsibilities? How does the UN compare to other players in the peace operation business? These are some of the important questions that will be addressed.
Chairing the session will be Dr. Markus Jachtenfuchs, Director of the MPP Program and Professor of the European and Global Governance at the Hertie School of Governance, Berlin. Speaking at the session will be Thorsten Benner, Co-founder and Associate Director of the Global Public Policy Institute, Berlin; Dr. Thomas Risse, Director of the Center for Transnational Relations, Foreign and Security Policy at the Otto Suhr Institute of Political Science at the Free University, Berlin; and Prof. Ruth Wedgwood, Director of the International Law and Organizations Program at the School of Advanced International Studies (Johns Hopkins), Washington D.C.
The May 5th 2008 CES Berlin Dialogues is organized in cooperation with: Gemeinnützige Hertie Stiftung; Hertie School of Governance Berlin; Minda de Gunzberg Center for European Studies; and Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung
