GPPi publishes report on Wilton Park conference on UN reform
Wilton Park published the report on the conference "What Future Priorities for the United Nations?" which took place from July 16-19 2007. The report was written by GPPi Associate Director Thorsten Benner who participated in the conference which brought together UN officials, member state representatives and researchers.
Taking stock of developments seven months into the term of office of Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, the conference sought to examine how the UN is tackling issues such as management reform and improving system-wide coherence among UN agencies working in-country on development, humanitarian or environmental assistance. It considered what reform, or change, may be expected in the UN, and how trust can be built among member states, and between member states and the UN secretariat.
The conference brought together government representatives from 36 countries in Africa, Asia, North and South America, the Caribbean, the Middle East and Europe, in particular from pilot countries for the UN's "delivering as one" initiative, together with UN officials from New York, Geneva and Vienna, representatives of the European Union and the Commonwealth Secretariat, policy institutes and non-governmental organisations.
