GPPi publishes "Partnerships for Sustainable Development: On the Road to Implementation"
On Thursday, May 11th, GPPi presented the Seed Initiative Partnership Report 2006 at the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) 14th annual session in New York. Partnerships for Sustainable Development: On the Road to Implementation is authored by GPPi’s Julia Steets and uses the experiences of the Seed partnerships – case studies of five Seed Award winners and survey responses from 70 applicants – to shed light on critical questions in the debate about partnerships. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Focusing on timely issues of impact, local ownership, business and financial models, and the planning and management in development partnerships, the report seeks to answer some of the most pressing questions arising in recent years: Given their potential for impact, how can governments or donors best support partnerships for sustainable development? How can partnerships overcome the challenges of local ownership and highlight its advantages? Which financial instruments are needed to allow innovative partnership business models to flourish? How can partnership practitioners and donors work together to build capacities for improved planning and management? In addressing these questions, the Seed Initiative Partnership Report 2006 appeals to those involved in partnerships to take the next step on the ‘Road to Implementation’ by setting into motion some of the recommendations outlined in the study.
Finally, the special contribution of the report lies in the nature of the partnerships analysed. Reflecting the focus of the Seed Initiative, the partnerships are overwhelmingly in their early stages of development and feature strong local ownership. The study thus complements other research that often builds on the experiences of well established, global initiatives
