GPPi presents papers and chairs panel at World Conference on Humanitarian Studies
GPPi Research Associate Kelly Johnson chaired a panel on “Enhancing Transatlantic Governance of Humanitarian Crises” as part of the World Conference of Humanitarian Studies in Groningen, the Netherlands from 4-8 February 2009.
GPPi’s contribution to the World Conference of Humanitarian Studies is part of its current research project “Raising the Bar: Enhancing transatlantic governance of disaster response and preparedness”.
Building on the themes from the “Raising the Bar” project the panel sought to identify specific areas for enhancing transatlantic cooperation in the realm of humanitarian assistance. The papers presented on the panel discussed core tensions within the field of humanitarian aid including: how international donors can work to resolve these tensions; how major donors such as ECHO can support institutional learning; and the preliminary results coming from the “Raising the Bar” project.
GPPi further contributed to this panel by presenting two papers. Julia Steets, Associate Director of GPPi, presented a framework piece on the need for transatlantic dialogues in humanitarian action, and Andrea Binder, Project Manager at GPPi, presented on Humanitarian Cooperation with China.
Kai Koddenbrock, Research Associate at GPPi, also presented a paper based on his research as part of the “Raising the Bar” project on Linking Relief Rehabilitation and Development on a separate panel entitled Learning From Recovery.
