GPPi Research Associate Björn Conrad took part in a round-table discussion on “Emerging Economies in the Post-crisis Period” on 25 January 2010. The policy dialogue, organized by the Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenar-beit (GTZ), brought together German policy experts and a delegation of the China Institute for Reform and Development (CIRD) to discuss China’s economic policies after the crisis and China’s changing role in Global Economic and Financial Governance.´

CIRD-President Professor CHI Fulin, a prominent Chinese scholar and policy advisor on economic policies, outlined China’s economic strategy for the coming decade, highlighting China’s determination to use the crisis as an opportunity to facilitate the comprehensive transformation of China’s economic structure and the shift towards a new development model.

The participants, including speakers Professor Rolf Langhammer (Kiel Institute for the World Economy) and Professor Ulrich Heilemann (University of Leipzig) as well as representatives from German think tanks, political foundations and academic institutions, discussed the prospects of China’s economic development, major challenges as well as implications for China’s future role on the international stage. Topics discussed included China’s transition from a production-centered to a consumption-centered economy, the reform of China’s social security systems and the provision of public services as well as the challenges of environmental degradation and carbon-intensive economic structures.
