GPPi participates in “Global Atlanticists” meeting in Washington D.C.

GPPi contributed to the seventh meeting of the “Global Atlanticists”, a cross-partisan network of German and US lawmakers, policy advisors, and think tank representatives. The conference was organized by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and took place in Warrenton, Virginia and Washington D.C. from 13-16 April. GPPi Associate Director Thorsten Benner, in cooperation with colleague Christopher Wratil, produced a background paper for the conference and took part in the meeting.

The discussions of the meeting focused on strategies for Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, and Pakistan and for coping with the current global financial crisis. In conjunction with the meeting, the group also met with the US Senator Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina); three key advisors to the Hillary Clinton, John McCain and Barack Obama presidential campaigns; Kurt Volker, the new US ambassador to NATO; and Michael Hofmann, German Executive Director at the World Bank.

The Global Atlanticists network is a bipartisan transatlantic network established to promote US-EU strategic debate on important issues such as migration, nuclear threats and Middle East policy. The aim of the network is to broaden the transatlantic agenda and to provide a reliable basis for effective European-American cooperation. GPPi Associate Director Thorsten Benner and GPPi fellow Sergey Lagodinsky are members of the group. GPPi has participated in the network since its inception in 2003 and prepares a policy paper for each of the meetings covering the main topics to be discussed and serving as a common basis for discussion.
