GPPi participated in Brookings-MGI conference in Berlin
GPPi Director Wolfgang Reinicke took part in the Managing Global Insecurity (MGI) conference on 15-16 July, 2008. The MGI is a joint initiative by the Brookings Institution, the Center on International Cooperation at New York University, and the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford University. The event, entitled Responsible Sovereignty: International Cooperation for a Changed World, was hosted by The Bertelsmann Stiftung in Berlin.
Cognizant of the presently turbulent global system, the aim of the MGI project is to launch a new reform effort for the global security system in 2009. Bringing together politicians, state representatives and field leaders, the purpose of this meeting was to generate political momentum for the next American president, the United Nations, and key international partners in an effort to revitalize the multilateral security system in 2009.
The two day conference covered various issues in the global security agenda. The opening plenary session provided participants with an introduction to the MGI project. Topics discussed included climate change, energy and food security; nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament; and civil violence and regional conflicts.
Participants present during the event included Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations; Javier Solana, High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, European Union; Mohammad ElBaradei, Director General, The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA); Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Foreign Minister of Germany; Lourdes Aranda Bezaury, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mexico; Paul Martin, Former Prime Minister of Canada; Strobe Talbott, President, The Brookings Institution; Sylvia Mathews Burwell, President, Global Development Program, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; Wolfgang Ischinger, Chairman, Munich Conference on Security Policy; and Gunter Thielen, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The Bertelsmann Stiftung.
