GPPi moderates panel discussion on "Right to Food"
On 30 January 2007, GPPi Associate Director Jan Martin Witte moderated an evening panel discussion on the "Right to Food: Human rights, sustainability and natural resource conservation: In harmony or conflict?" at the GTZ-Haus in Berlin.
This panel discussion concluded a day-long international expert conference that reviewed progress of international efforts in the implementation of the Right to Food. Supporters of the Right to Food argue that this approach offers new opportunities to combat hunger and poverty. Questions addressed included: what has been achieved with regard to the actual implementation of that right? How does this approach tie in with efforts aimed at the long-term preservation, management and development of natural resources and biodiversity as the bases of food security?
Panellists included Karin Kortmann, Parliamentary State Secretary at German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Professor Herta Däubler-Gmelin, Chair of the German Bundestag's Committee on Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid, Lynn R. Brown, The World Bank., R.V. Bhavani, M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation and Alexander Müller, Director-General, FAO. The conference was organized by the GTZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
