GPPi fellow gives talk on African oil states in Hamburg
Ricardo Soares de Oliveira, a Fellow at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge and also a GPPi Fellow, gave a presentation on the paradoxical business success in Angola, one of the world’s worst-governed states.
The presentation, "Business Success, Angolan-Style: the Postcolonial State and the Rise of Sonangol" focused on the Angolan national oil company Sonangol and, amongst other themes, highlighted the extent to which a nominal "failed state" can go on surviving and indeed thriving amidst widespread human destitution, provided that basic tools for elite empowerment (in this case, Sonangol and the means of coercion) exist to ensure the viability of incumbents.
The colloquium was held in Hamburg on Friday, July 7, 2006, 15.00 at the GIGA-Institute of African Affairs, Room 519, Neuer Jungfernstieg 21.
