GPPi fellow comments on Russian elections

GPPI Fellow Sergey Lagodinsky commented on the current situation in Russia for "Quadriga", a program by Deutsche Welle TV, the German state television for foreign broadcasts.

On the program, Sergey offered his view on the Russian elections which took place on 2 December 2007. Asked about the possible role of Putin in the future of Russia, Sergey Lagodinsky stressed that predictions on his exact political role are irrelevant. The only essential fact is that the future of Russian political system depends on the will of one particular person or his team - a clear sign of lack of democracy. At the same time Lagodinsky underlined that it is up to the Russian people to decide who should lead their country. At the same time, he stressed, it is important for the West to openly confess that Russia neither is nor is on the way to becomoing a liberal democracy. Honesty is the first step to realism, says Lagodinsky.
