GPPi contributed to GMF discussion on private foundations in development
GPPi Associate Director Jan Martin Witte presented results on the role of philanthropic foundations in international development cooperation. The event, entitled “Transforming Development? The Role of Philanthropic Foundations in International Development Cooperation,” took place on Monday, July 14, 2008, under the auspices of the German Marshall Fund of the United States.
Beginning at noon, the presentation provided a first-hand assessment on the role of philanthropic foundation in development. The event aimed to elucidate and bring structure to the ongoing debates on what the implications are for the international aid architecture vis-à-vis philanthropic foundations, followed by a roundtable discussion.
The roundtable discussion featured Jan Martin Witte, Associate Director of the Global Public Policy Institute and Country Representative of Living Goods Uganda; Geoffrey Lamb, Managing Director for Public Policy at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Moderating the discussion was Nicola Lightner, Program Officer for Economic Policy at The German Marshall Fund of the United States.
