GPPi contributes to Finnish government hearing on global security
GPPi Associate Director Thorsten Benner presented a seminar on “Trends in Global Security” organized by the Finnish Government in Helsinki on 31 January 2008. The meeting was part of the consultations leading to the Finnish Government's White Book on Security and Defence Policy due in the fall of 2008. The seminar brought together members of parliament as well as senior representatives from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defence and the Prime Minister's Office in charge of preparing the White Book.
Thorsten Benner’s presentation entitled “Trajectories of Global Governance” focused on some of the key cross-cutting challenges with regards to making global governance work: issue linkages; time horizons; the public-private interface as well as the integration of new powers. The three other contributors to the meeting were Professor John L. Esposito (Georgetown University), Professor David Hulme (University of Manchester) and Professor David L. Shambaugh (George Washington University/Brookings Institution).
Opening the meeting was Ilkka Kanerva, Finland’s Foreign Minister and chaired by Teija Tiilikainen, State Secretary in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs; Eija Limnell, Director of the Unit for Policy Planning and Research and Kari Möttölä, Professor, Unit for Policy Planning and Research, MFA as well as Markus Lyra, Under-Secretary of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
