GPPi chairs discussion on the role of the EU in the UN Peacebuilding Commission
GPPi Associate Director Thorsten Benner moderated a discussion focusing on the EU's role in the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission. The discussion, which took place on 5 October 2007, was part of a conference entitled "The EU as a global actor in the UN reform process" organized jointly by the University of Kiel and the Italian Institute of International Affairs that took place on 4-5 October 2007. The conference was sponsored by the Volkswagen Foundation and brought together academics and policymakers for a two-day exchange on a future agenda for the EU's role in UN reform.
The panel on the role of the EU in the UN Peacebuilding Commission included Prof. Dr. Sven Gareis (Bundeswehr Command and Staff College), Dr. Kennedy Graham (University of Canterbury, UK) and Dr. Janusz Symonides (University of Warsaw, Poland) and underlined the need for more research on doctrine development and lessons learned during peace operations both for the UN and the EU.
