UNICEF Global Strategy for Collaborative Relationships and Partnerships

October 2008 - May 2009

Project Context

UNICEF relies on a broad and diverse set of collaborative relationships and partnerships to implement its mission – strengthening the protection of children’s rights, helping to meet their basic needs and expanding their opportunities. These relationships involve different kinds of partner organizations, ranging from local community-based organizations and companies to international NGOs, multi-national corporations and other international organizations. Partnerships contribute to UNICEF’s work through a wide range of activities, focusing on the implementation of programs, the mobilization of resources, as well as policy development and advocacy campaigns.

How can UNICEF best utilize its own, as well as its partners’ capacities to fulfil its mission and create the best results for children? This is the question at the core of building a comprehensive strategy for partnerships. UNICEF has already analyzed and evaluated its partnership activities in different areas. It has conducted a review of partnerships with civil society actors, produced a report on UNICEF’s engagement with corporate actors and is in the process of carrying out a more comprehensive evaluation of partnership activities. These reports are important building blocks for an emerging comprehensive strategy for partnerships.

Project Objectives

GPPi supported UNICEF in conducting complementary research and in translating the results of these studies into a coherent and comprehensive organizational strategy for collaborative relationships and partnerships. GPPi also developed five short case studies on Global Program Partnerships for UNICEF.
