Stuart Hensel is a GPPi Fellow based in Kampala, Uganda. Before joining GPPi, Stuart worked in London as a Senior Economist at the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) focusing on the former Soviet Union. At the EIU he served as chief analyst for Ukraine and Russia, wrote extensively about other countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and provided commentary on post-Soviet affairs for a range of media, including CNN, BBC and MSNBC. On leave from the EIU in 2006, Stuart researched the frozen conflict in Transnistria (Moldova), producing a Strategic Conflict Assessment for the UK Foreign Office, Department for International Development (DFID) and Ministry of Defence. Other research interests have included the relationship between remittances and economic growth, institutional capacity building in transition economies, and the impact of EU policies on democratic development in the post-Soviet space.
Prior to his work at the Economist Intelligence Unit, Stuart Hensel served as a program officer at the Washington-based National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI), where he helped to design and implement democracy-building programs in Central Eastern Europe and the Balkans.
Stuart Hensel holds an MA in International Affairs from the John Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and a BA in Political Economy from Princeton University.
