Michael Schmidmayr

Michael Schmidmayr is a fellow with the Global Public Policy Institute in Berlin as well as lecturer and associate director for international relations at the Nancy-based French-German Campus of Sciences Po Paris. His areas of expertise include international security and the politics of the Middle East, as well as roles and strategies of political opposition in authoritarian regimes.
His work experience includes assignments with the German Foreign Office, where he was the desk officer for Egypt, Jordan, the Arab League and the MFO, as well as with the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, the Institut des Relations Internationales et Stratégiques in Paris and the secretariat of the French-German Defense and Security Council in Paris. He has published on the politics of the Middle East, focusing in particular on aspects related to Iraq and the Gulf (mainly Kuwait and Bahrain).
He holds a PhD from the University of Tübingen, a professional MA and a research-focused MA in political science from Sciences Po Paris. He graduated from Sciences Po’s French-German undergraduate program in Nancy. He received scholarships from the German National Merit Foundation.
