Kai Koddenbrock

Kai Koddenbrock is a Fellow with the Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi) in Berlin and a Ph.D. candidate in Political Science at the University of Magdeburg. In his dissertation – "The Rationality to Intervene: Life and the Political Among Humanitarianism and Peacekeeping in the Congo" – he interrogates humanitarians' and peacekeepers' self-expressed objectives, perceptions and experiences, complemented by an analysis of organizational mandates and strategies. Kai is a member of the Colloquium of the Frankfurt Research Center for Postcolonial Studies and of the German Political Science Association's AK Gewaltordnungen.

Kai was a consultant to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the GTZ as well as a lead seminar facilitator and tutor for GLEN and Inwent. He interned at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and a development NGO in Togo and worked at a Camphill School for disabled youngsters in South Africa. His commentary has been featured on the BBC, Deutsche Welle World and in the journal Context. His publications include "Aimless Power: Humanitarianism and Peacekeeping in the Congo" (forthcoming) and "Smart Sanctions Against Failed States – Strengthening the State through UN Smart Sanctions in Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo" (2008).

Kai holds a Diploma in International Cultural and Economic Studies from the University of Passau, Germany, and studied Political Science at the University of Passau and the Free University Berlin. He received scholarships from the German National Academic Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes), the Carlo-Schmid Programme and the ASA Programme. His Ph.D. is funded by the Heinrich-Böll Foundation.
